HISTORY GCSE

COURSE DETAILS:

There will be opportunities for a range of varied activities - group work, discussion, individual research, source work and extended writing (which is always guided).

The course aims to help students understand the world around them and to develop a wide range of skills and a way of working that will be very useful in later life.

There are 2 examination papers plus a controlled assessment.

  • Unit 1 - Written paper - 1 hour 45 minutes - 37.5% of the total marks
  • Unit 2 - Written paper - 1 hour 45 minutes - 37.5% of the total marks
  • Unit 3 - Historical Enquiry British History - controlled assessment -

The British People in War - 40 marks 25% of the total marks

The course builds on KS3 studies and aims to provide opportunities to study History from a variety of perspectives, including political, social, economic and cultural thereby helping candidates to appreciate the diversity of the societies studied, and the experiences of the people in these societies. The course presents the opportunity to study the history of Britain, Europe and the World in the 20th Century, in both breadth & depth.

Course Title: Modern World History

The main areas of study are:

1. Unit 1: International Relations: Conflict and Peace in the 20th Century.

This unit provides an outline study of history. The content is on international relations and covers many
of the main events of the 20th Century post 1933.

  • Hitler’s foreign policy and the origins of World War 11
  • The Origins of the Cold War 1945 - 1955
  • Crisis of the Cold War 1955 - 1970

2. 20th Century Depth Studies

The unit requires the study of governments throughout the Twentieth Century. It gives a national focus
to studies in depth, based on events, developments and issues in specified countries.

  • The Roaring 20s: USA 1918 - 1929
  • The USA and Vietnam: Failure Abroad and at Home 1964 - 1975

3. Historical Enquiry - British History

This unit requires candidates to produce a Historical Enquiry of approx. 2000 words on Britain in the 20th Century. The tasks for the Historical Enquiry will be set by AQA. The topic for the Historical Enquiry is the British People in War. The key questions are:

  • How did the First World War and the Second World War change the way of life of the people of Britain?
  • To what extent and why did the experience of the British people at war in the First World War differ
    from their experience in the Second World War?
